Karamo (Full name: Karamo Karega Brown) is an American actor, reality television personality, activist, television host, and author. Karega started his career in 2004 on the MTV reality show called The Real World: Philadelphia. He became the first openly gay black man cast on a reality show. Currently, Karega stars in the Netflix series Queer Eye as the culture expert.

He worked in social services for almost ten years after The Real World. He appeared in Taylor Swift’s “You Need to Calm Down” music video in June 2019. Karega teamed up with Honest Company alumni in 2020 to create a premium personal care brand, MANTL, for bald and/or balding men. He was named to the Ebony Power 100 List in the same year.

In March 2022, Karega judged an episode of Is It Cake?, which premiered on Netflix. Also, he appeared as a guest host for several episodes of Maury in the 2021–22 season. He was announced as host Maury Povich’s successor; in march 2022. Povich will retire and Karega will host a new talk show for NBCUniversal Television Distribution beginning in September 2022.

He appeared on a 2003 episode of a heterosexual reality dating game show called The 5th Wheel as a contestant. Karega and another male contestant went on a joint date with three female contestants. Karega gave no indication that he is gay even though he came out when he was 15. He gained fame for his television debut on the MTV reality series titled The Real World: Philadelphia in 2004.

He was the first gay black man on reality TV. Later, Karega competed in the Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Inferno II but was eliminated in episode six. In 2016, he returned to reality television on TV One’s The Next 15, which followed him and five other reality stars. He served as a contributing host on HLN’s Dr. Drew On Call, and YouTube’s The Young Turk.

Also, Karega was a host and producer of HuffPost Live for Huffington Post. Apart from that, he was a recurring guest host of Access Hollywood Live. Karega became a host and segment producer for the Own Show in 2014. He served as the host of MTV’s Are You The One: Second Chances. Currently, he is the culture expert in the Netflix revival of Queer Eye. The first season of the show was released on Netflix in February 2018.

He competed on the 28th season of the celebrity dance competition Dancing with the Star in 2019. Karega was paired with professional dancer Jenna Johnson. The pair was the fourth couple eliminated. Former Trump White House press secretary Sean Spicer was another competitor on the show. He was seen as a divisive and controversial choice. Karega publicly came to “defend” him “calling him a good guy and a friend.’

Karega even said that he ‘was proud of him.’ Following his statement, Karega was criticized by many, including author Roxane Gay for normalizing Spicer and his work in the White House. However, he defended himself by saying that he did not appreciate Spicer serving as a mouthpiece for many lies in the service of Trump. Karega’s trailer at DWTS shared a wall with him. He strategically had transgender friends over and invited Spicer to socialize.

Karega would later tell Spicer how the actions and policies against LGBTQ rights affect those people. Karega explained how he felt he could connect with Spicer since “he has the capacity to find out where others are coming from and to help them become more open-minded and educated. “In early  2018, Karega shared some of his best advice about promoting self-esteem to students at multiple universities.

Karamo Books

His children’s book, I Am Perfectly Designed, written with Jason “Rachel” Brown and illustrated by Anoosha Syed, was published in November 2019 by Henry Holt. Jason said that the book’s title stemmed from Karega always saying it to Jason growing up. In March 2019, Karega published a memoir titled Karamo: My Story of Embracing Purpose, Healing, and Hope.
