Rebecca Hazelton Poems

She is the author of four collections of poetry: Fair Copy in 2012, for which  Rebecca won the Ohio State University Press/The Journal Award in Poetry), Vow in 2013, No Girls No Telephones in 2013 which was written with Brittany Cavallaro,  and Bad Star still in 2013. In Fair Copy, Rebecca engages with the poetry of Emily Dickinson. She uses the first lines of Dickinson’s poems as acrostics from which Rebecca wrote her own poems.

The project used the first line of every 29th poem from The Complete Works of Emily Dickinson starting on Rebecca’s 29th birthday. As Christina Pugh was reviewing the collection in The Emily Dickinson Journal, she said Rebecca’s “handling of the line is often astonishingly virtuosic, and [her] material is only ‘personal’ in the coyest and most mercurial of ways.” Christina noted that these qualities echo Dickinson’s own body of work.

According to a Publishers Weekly review of Vow “real bodies and adult relationships mingle and complement one another in this clear, witty second effort from Hazelton,” noting “her elegantly colloquial” style. Rebecca’s work has been anthologized in the Best New Poets series in 2011, 2015 (“My Husband”), and The Best American Poetry series in 2013 (“Book of Forget”).
