Spencer Ackerman is an American author, journalist, blogger, and writer. Currently, he primarily focuses on national security. Spencer started his career at The New Republic in 2002 prior to writing for Wired, The Guardian, and The Daily Beast. In 2012, he won a National Magazine Award for reporting on biased FBI training materials.
After Spencer graduated from Rutgers, he moved to Washington, D.C., and joined The New Republic. There, he covered national security. In an interview with Columbia Journalism Review, Spencer said that witnessing the September 11 attacks influenced his decision to cover national security. He viewed it as the most critical issue facing the nation at the time. Spencer co-wrote an article along with his then-colleague John Judis that eventually led to the Plame affair.
Initially, Spencer was a supporter of the invasion of Iraq, but he then became disillusioned. In early January 2004, he expressed opposition to the conflict in Iraq’d. He launched a blog dedicated to covering post-invasion developments in the country. Spencer also worked at The New Republic (TNR) until 2006. He later established another log called Too Hot for TNR. He was fired over what he described as irreconcilable ideological differences. A then-editor at the magazine called [27][28] Franklin Foer said that Spencer was fired for insubordination and disparaging the magazine on his blog.
