He was born in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and raised in Borough Park by his parents Claire and Harry Dershowitz. Alan’s parents were an Orthodox Jewish couple. His father served as the founder and president of the Young Israel of Boro Park Synagogue in the 1960s. He was on the board of directors of the Etz Chaim School in Borough Park, and in retirement was co-owner of the Manhattan-based Merit Sales Company.
