Romesh Ranganathan ( Full name: Jonathan Romesh Ranganathan) is an English comedian, actor, and presenter. He is best known for his deadpan and often self-deprecating comedy. Romesh has made countless appearances on television comedy panel shows. In  2016, he co-presented It’s Not Rocket Science alongside Rachel Riley and Ben Miller on ITV.

Also, he has been a regular panelist on The Apprentice: You’re Fired!, The Museum of Curiosity, as well as Play to the Whistle. Romesh has been appearing as a guest on several episodes of 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown. Also, he appeared on QI, Have I Got News for You, Virtually Famous, The Last Leg, Sweat the Small Stuff, Russell Howard’s Good News, Soccer AM, Holby City, Would I Lie to You?, and Mock the Week.

He was born to his parents in Crawley, West Sussex. He was raised by his Sri Lankan Tamil Hindu parents Ranga and Sivashanthini “Shanthi” Ranganathan. His mother Shanthy regularly appears in his telly work – in any capacity

His dad left Romesh’s mother Shanthy for another woman and was jailed for fraud. Romesh lost his dad Ranga before he swapped life as a maths teacher for that of a comedian. Ranga was the inspiration for Romesh’s sitcom The Reluctant Landlord, as he once ran a pub in West Sussex.  Romesh opened up about his father going to prison around the time his autobiography Straight Outta Crawley: Memoirs Of A Distinctly Average Human Being was released in 2018.

When Romesh was a teenager, debts resulted in the family home being repossessed. Ranga who was an accountant left his wife and sons to move in with another woman. Romesh, his brother Dinesh and their mum lived in one bedroom in a B&B while they waited for a council house. Shanthy took on a multitude of jobs to keep her sons alive. Ranga reportedly passed away in 2011 from a heart attack.

Currently, Romesh lives in Crawley with his wife Leesa. He met Leesa for the first time when they were both working at Hazelwick School, where  Leesa was a drama teacher. The comedian is known by his middle name Romesh. He never found out until he started school that his first name, as stated on his birth certificate, was Jonathan. During his live show titled Irrational, Romesh recalled that his parents explained to him that they referred to him by his middle name since they were concerned his first name  “Jonathan” would sound too ‘ethnic’ when applying for jobs as an adult.
