Chris Kalous Aid Rant
After college, Chris spent three seasons guiding for Colorado Mountain School. He later relocated to Southern California and started ticking away at big Yosemite aid climbs. Chris’ first aid solo up El Capitan was the 18-pitch Aquarian Wall (5.7, A3) in 1994. By then, he was only 23 years old. He got caught in a storm on that climb that persisted for three days. As other parties called for rescues, Chris waited out the storm since he had ample food and water.
At the age of 26 in 1997, he decided to conclude the big wall soloing chapter of his climbing career. A pretty definitive moment came when he soloed the Gulf Stream, an A4 or A5 route. Chris could see the writing on the wall for what became the infamous aid rant, a short video in which Chris bashes aid climbing. He states that more people should be dying on A5 if the grading system is based on the danger of the route.
