John became the first Carnival Cruise director who did not start working in the entertainment aspect of cruising. He became cruise director at Carnival in 1990 and was promoted to the position of senior cruise director in 2004.
Later, John appointed the director of most new Carnival ships during their first sailings as the senior director at Carnival. He creates videos, telling his passengers about the cheapest excursions prior to each new voyage. His contract with Carnival states that John works for six consecutive months followed by two months off. His major role is to oversee the entertainment aspect of the ship, including the dancers and the orchestra.
When the ship’s engine room caught fire and stranded the passengers at sea off the coast of Mexico for over three days. John was still the cruise director of the Carnival Splendor. He discussed the incident in his blog which Mary Forgione, the Los Angeles Times employee called a “lurid personal account of being stranded at sea”. Carnival gave John the “Sea Going Employee of the Year” award in September 2007.
