Mike Musto Cars
Almost 17 years ago, Mike was sitting in his apartment in Queens, New York. A foot of snow was on the ground and he was getting his feet wet in the automotive industry. A few years earlier, Mike had up and quit his job as a web designer at a Manhattan investment firm so he could play with cars for a living. Mind you, he had no idea how to make money at this. He jumped in headfirst, speaking to everyone he could to gain experience.
For the next ten years or so, Mike basically worked for free for whoever would take his writing and listen to his automotive ramblings. He got a job at an automotive event services company that taught Mike the back-end of how to deal with automotive manufacturers. A stint on a reality show, along with a co-hosting gig on Sirius Satellite Radio at the same time helped Mike gain an audience.
Mike Musto Big Muscle
In 2011, the New York winters took their toll, along with the rigors of city life, Mike knew if he didn’t flee the state soon, he would kill someone, or someone would kill him. So, he and Kurt Ernst packed up a moving van, shipped the cars, and went to start a new life in the San Francisco Bay area, 3,000 miles away.
By then, social media was starting up. There was MySpace and YouTube. However, platforms such as Facebook and Instagram were still infants. Also, online automotive content was starting to emerge. When that happened, the ball game changed entirely. The /DRIVE Channel on YouTube had just started, and a show that Mike pitched was picked up. It was called /BIG MUSCLE. The muscle car show is now part of the /DRIVE network on YouTube.
Over the next four years or so, Mike and Kurt pumped out close to 80 episodes and gained quite a following in the classic car/muscle car communities. Mike learned about video production, social media strategy, editing, as well as how to tell an honest story that folks would like. In conjunction with that, they launched an automotive consulting agency where they would take on projects for automotive-based businesses. Currently, this has been the most rewarding education process Mike has ever been privy to.
Mike Musto Hemmings
In late 2009, he manage to secure a job as the Editor-in-Chief of a current-defunct automotive website. This became the first automotive job that actually paid anything close to a salary. While there, Mike met Kurt Ernst, the current Hemmings Managing Editor. Back then, the pair feed the beast with as much content as they could. Together, they built one helluva little web property. Around this time, Mike received the January 2010 issue of Hemmings Muscle Machines.
On the cover was a car that he had recently finished (a 1969 Dodge Daytona clone). The car was crowned Muscle Machine of the Year by some articles. This was the first time a Mopar had this honor and the first time Hemmings had ever put a pro-touring style car on the cover of a magazine. Although some did not like it, the experience shook the audience of one of the most respected automotive publications and made them rethink what was acceptable.
