In 1989, he signed on to a part-time schedule for the new SABCO Racing team. Initially, Kyle started the season unsponsored. Later, he and SABCO picked up sponsorship from Peak Antifreeze after Kyle filled in for Eddie Bierschwale and  Ames Department Stores and drove their car to a top-ten finish at the Daytona 500.

Kyle and the #42 Pontiac team competed in 19th races that season where his best finish was a 4th at Atlanta. In 1990, Peak became the team’s full-time sponsor and Kyle finished  11th in points after he won the GM Goodwrench 500 with a 26-second margin of victory at North Carolina Speedway. In 1991, Mello Yello would replace Peak as a sponsor of the #42.

Kyle was running 11th in points when he suffered a broken leg at a crash at Talladega in the Winston 500 and he missed the next eleven races as a result.  Kyle finish the season 30th in points after his abbreviated schedule was combined with only one top-ten in the second half of the season. In 1994, Kyle dropped ten spots after failing to finish higher than fourth. As a result, he lost the Mello Yello sponsorship at the end of the season.

Kyle made his Winston Cup Series debut later in the season driving a passed down STP Dodge Magnum numbered No. 42 for his family’s team. This number was used by his grandfather Lee Petty). Kyle ran five races and placed ninth in the 1979 Talladega 500, his first series race. He made a total of fifteen starts in the No. 42 in 1980 after he crashed the last of his father’s Dodge Magnums in one of the Daytona 125 qualifying races.

Kyle had six top-ten finishes and garnered twenty-eighth-place points finish. Kyle started the 1981 season by driving his father’s No. 43 for one race prior to running a full schedule in his regular No. 42, he finished in the top-ten ten times and also finished twelfth in points. Kyle started the 1982 season with two top-ten finishes.

However, he ended the season fifteenth in points after he began splitting time between his No. 42 and the No. 1 UNO/STP car owned by Hoss Ellington. Kyle picked up funding from 7-Eleven in 1993 and switched his number to 7 accordingly. Although he had only two top-ten finishes, Kyle improved to thirteenth in the standings. In the following year, he followed that season up with six top-tens. However, he fell three spots in points.

Apart from being a stock car racing driver, Kyle is also known for his brief attempts as a professional country musician.  RCA Records signed him to a record contract in 1986 and started work on an album with Don Light.  “The Other Guy” was his lone single from this period. The song led to appearances on Hee Haw and also opened for acts including The Oak Ridge Boys and Randy Travis.

Later, Kyle abandoned the album project due to disagreements with his record company and management. However, he then recorded a track entitled “Oh King Richard”,  which was a tribute to his father Richard. The track was written by Rodney Crowell and released as part of a NASCAR-themed country music compilation album in 1995. The music video for the song was produced later that featured  Kyle playing an acoustic guitar in front of his father’s No. 43 racecar, as his father Richard watched highlights of his career on a screen.
