Alexei Navalny is a Russian opposition leader, politician, lawyer, and anti-corruption activist. He received an award of the “Person of the Year” award in 2009 from a Russian business newspaper called “Vidrosti” for his contribution to corruption. Navalny is quite active on social media, where he has more than six million subscribers on YouTube and over two million Twitter followers.
He came to international prominence through organizing demonstrations and running for office. Navalny wanted to advocate reforms against corruption in Russia, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and his government. He has been described as “the man Vladimir Putin fears most” by The Wall Street Journal. President Putin avoids directly referring to Navalny by name.
Navalny is a leader of the Russia of the Future party, a Russian Opposition Coordination Council member, and the founder of the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK). Through his social media channels, he organizes political demonstrations, publishes materials about corruption in Russia, and promotes his campaigns.
In March 2017, Navalny and FBK released the documentary “He Is Not Dimon to You”, accusing Dmitry Medvedev, the then prime minister and former president of Russia, of corruption, which led to mass protests across the country. On 20 August 2020, Navalny was hospitalized in serious condition after he was poisoned with a lethal nerve agent Novichok planted in his underpants during a flight from Tomsk to Moscow. However, on September 7, doctors announced that they had taken him out of the induced coma and that his condition had improved. Navalny was later discharged on September 22.
The OPCW said that a cholinesterase inhibitor from the Novichok group was found in Navalny’s blood, urine, skin samples, and his water bottle. Their report also clarified that he was poisoned with a new type of Novichok, which was not included in the list of controlled chemicals of the Chemical Weapons Convention.
However, Russian prosecutors refused to open a criminal investigation into the matter. The EU and the UK responded by imposing sanctions on six senior Russian officials and a state chemical center. On January 17, 2021, Navalny returned to Russia, where he was immediately arrested in Moscow on accusations of violating the terms of a suspended jail sentence.
