Hugo Sánchez is a Mexican former professional footballer and manager. He played as a forward and became regarded as the greatest Mexican footballer of all time. In 1999, the International Federation of Football History and Statistics voted Hugo the 26th best footballer of the 20th century, and the best footballer from the CONCACAF region.
He commenced his career playing for Club Universidad Nacional in 1976, and briefly went on loan to the San Diego Sockers of the North American Soccer League in 1979. In 1981, Hugo moved to Spain to play for Atlético Madrid, playing for the Colchoneros for four years. He then moved to cross-town rivals Real Madrid, where he spent the best years of his career, winning numerous titles and accolades.

After having played 80 international games by the age of 18, Hugo signed as a youth player for UNAM Pumas. Two years and 26 goals later, he became the top-scorer in Mexico’s Primera División. After five successful seasons in Mexico and 99 goals to his name, Hugo signed for Atlético de Madrid in 1981. In 1985, he signed for Real Madrid where he won five consecutive league titles. After his retirement, he started his career as a coach with UNAM Pumas where he won two championships.
