Marty tutored him at around the same time as his better-known pupil called Marv Albert. He once noted while discussing his two-star pupils (Albert & Spencer), that Spencer was one of the best, if not the best radio play-by-player ever who called a game. He cited his distinctive voice and also his ability to make smooth transitions during gameplay.
