Moreover, he was traded to the Florida Marlins on February 1, 1999, for Mark Johnson and Ed Yarnall.
Mike played for the team from 1999 to 2005. He discovered he had testicular cancer and underwent surgery on February 21 returning to the lineup on May 29, while waiting for spring training. In 2003 he suffered a broken hand when he was hit by a pitch by the Montreal Expos’ Héctor Almonte. Further, he was traded to Red Sox in exchange for Hanley Ramírez, Aníbal Sánchez, Jesús Delgado and Harvey García.
He played for the team from 2005 to 2010. During his tenure, he appeared in the 2007 world series MVP, won Gold Glove Award in 2005. Between 2008 and 2009 he had trouble with a torn hip labrum that required surgery. The surgery made him miss most of the 2008 playoffs. The team planned to trade him to Texas but the plan did not go through. Mike retired after the 2010 season was complete and on October 2, 2010, he was honored with an on-field ceremony.
