Gerry Callahan WEEI | Kirk Minihane
He received his own show in 1997 with co-host John Dennis after filling in on The Big Show with Glenn Ordway, the Boston radio legend. The show was a staple for sports fans in Boston. It consistently produced strong ratings throughout its tenure. The show’s co-host John Dennis stepped down from his role in 2016 to focus on his health. His decision to step down paved the rise for controversial star Kirk Minihane and the infamous Kirk & Callahan show.
At the peak of the Kirk & Callahan show, it was consistently the number one rated sports talk show in Boston. The show won over its competitor Toucher & Rich in the head-to-head for males 25 -54. In 2017, Bob Murchison the activist launched a successful campaign to cripple the financial success of the show. He consistently emailed advertisers of the program with quotes from the show he deemed offensive.
His action resulted in Kirk leaving the show permanently in 2018, with the heavy controversy surrounding his departure. After Kirk left the show, Gerry remained with the station as he hosted the Mut & Callahan show with co-host Mike “Mut” Mutnansky until July 2019. However, the show failed to produce the same rating success as Gerry’s previous shows.
As a result, he was unceremoniously removed from the station. His last show was on July 12, 2019, and shortly after, Gerry tweeted “After 20 years in morning drive, I did my last show on WEEI this morning. Thanks to all who listened. Unfortunately, this ain’t a movie. Sometimes the bad guys win. Much more to come.” The Greg Hill show, hosted by Greg Hill replaced Gerry’s show in the morning drive.
