He commenced his career as a reporter for the Winston-Salem Journal, before coming back to New England in 1979 as assistant city editor for the Boston Herald. In 2002, the Boston Herald and Howie became the subjects of a lawsuit by Superior Court Judge Ernest Murphy.
The Newspaper alleged that Murphy had mishandled lenient sentences in bail decisions in rape cases. The judge denied all of the allegations and claimed the newspaper libeled him. Ultimately, Murphy won the suit and received a $2.09 million payment.
