Tschabalala Self is a veteran American artist famously known for her depictions of Black female figures using paint, fabric, and discarded pieces from her previous works. Although Tschabalala uses mixed media, all of her works are on canvas and employ a “painting language.”
She was inspired by Romare Bearden, who is an African-American artist, Tschabalala creates collages of various things that she has gathered over time and sews them together to depict black female bodies that “defy the narrow spaces in which they are forced to exist”, Her goal as a painter is to “create alternative narratives around the black body”.[4] Much of Self’s work uses elements from black culture to construct quilt-like portraits.
