Sonny Dykes (Full Name: Daniel “Sonny” Dykes) is a popular American football coach and a former college baseball player who is now the head football coach at Texas Christian University (TCU). Before, Sonny worked in the same role at Southern Methodist University (SMU) from 2018 until 2021, the University of California, Berkeley from 2013 to 2016, and Louisiana Tech University from 2010 through 2012.
In his first season at TCU, Sonny led the Horned Frogs to a win in the semifinal and an appearance in the National Championship game. He began his career as a high school baseball and football coach in Texas. Sonny then moved to the junior college level as an assistant football coach, including stints with Kentucky, Texas Tech, and Arizona. In 2010, Sonny became a head college football coach for the first time at Louisiana Tech.
Sonny then became head coach at California in 2013. In 2017, Sonny was hired as head coach at Southern Methodist University. Sonny coached the Mustangs to three winning seasons, including a 10–3 record in 2019 which was the program’s best record in more than thirty years. Following his success at Southern Methodist, Sonny was hired as the head coach at Texas Christian University before the 2022 season.

He began his career as an assistant baseball coach at Monahans High School in Monahans, Texas, in the spring of 1994. Later that year, Sonny became the running backs coach at J. J. Pearce High School in Richardson, Texas.
Sonny coached at Navarro College in Corsicana, Texas, from 1995 until 1996. In 1995, Sonny coached the running backs as Navarro went 8-2. In 1996, he was the quarterbacks and receivers coach as well as the passing game coordinator for Navarro, which finished 7-4 and advanced to the Texas junior college championship game. Sonny coached Leroy Fields at Navarro, who led the country in receiving and was taken by the Denver Broncos in the seventh round of the 2000 NFL Draft.
He returned to Kentucky in 1999 to work as a wide receivers coach and special teams coordinator on Mumme’s staff. A win over #20 Arkansas and a trip to the Music City Bowl were season highlights. Sonny coached James Whalen at Kentucky, where he achieved consensus All-America honours and established the NCAA Division I record for tight end receptions. He also coached wide receiver Quentin McCord, who was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the seventh round of the 2001 NFL Draft.
He became the wide receivers coach on Mike Leach’s staff at Texas Tech in 2000. Texas Tech wide receivers set multiple individual school and conference receiving marks during his five seasons as receivers coach. Sonny coached wide receiver Carlos Francis, who concluded his career at Texas Tech with the second-most career touchdowns and third-most career receiving yards. Francis was taken by the Oakland Raiders in the fourth round of the 2004 NFL Draft.
