Lawrence Bacow ( Full Name: Lawrence Seldon Bacow) is a prominent American economist and retired university administrator. From 2018 to 2023, he was previously the 29th president of Harvard University. Prior to Harvard University, Lawrence worked at Harvard Kennedy School as the Hauser leader-in-residence at the Center for Public Leadership.
In 1997, he started his academic career at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). There, Lawrence worked as a professor of environmental studies in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning prior to becoming the department’s chair. Ultimately, he became the university’s chancellor. He then served as the 12th president of Tufts University from 2001 to 2011.
Lawrence joined the Harvard Graduate School of Education after leaving Tufts and was a member of and was a member of one of Harvard University’s governing boards. He announced on June 8, 2022, that he would be leaving the presidency of Harvard in June 2023 after 5 years in office. The Harvard Corporation announced in December 2022 that Claudine Gay would succeed him as Harvard’s 30th president.
