Yann Lecun Bio | Wiki

Yann Lecun ( Full Name: Yann André LeCun) is a popular Turing Award-winning French computer scientist serving primarily in the fields of machine learning, computer vision, mobile robotics, and computational neuroscience. He works as the Silver Professor of the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University and is Vice-President and Chief AI Scientist at Meta. Yann is well known for his work on optical character recognition and computer vision using convolutional neural networks (CNN), and is a founding father of convolutional nets.

In addition, Yann is one of the main creators of the DjVu image compression technology (together with Léon Bottou and Patrick Haffner). Yann co-developed the Lush programming language with Léon Bottou. He received the 2018 Turing Award (often referred to as the “Nobel Prize of Computing”), alongside Yoshua Bengio and Geoffrey Hinton, for their work on deep learning. The trio are sometimes referred to as the “Godfathers of AI” and “Godfathers of Deep Learning”.

Yann joined AT&T Bell Laboratories in Holmdel, NJ in 1988. He was head of the Image Processing Research Department at AT&T Labs-Research in 1996, and joined NYU as a professor in 2003, following a brief period as a Fellow of the NEC Research Institute in Princeton. From 2012 until 2014 Yann was the founding director of the NYU Center for Data Science. He is the co-director of the CIFAR program on Neural Computation and Adaptive Perception Program with Yoshua Bengio.

Yann Lecun Family

He was born at Soisy-sous-Montmorency in the suburbs of Paris. Yann’s name was originally spelled Le Cun from the old Breton form Le Cunff and was from the region of Guingamp in northern Brittany. Yann’s father worked as an engineer, whose interests in electronics and mechanics were passed on to Yann during a boyhood of tinkering.

Yann Lecun Wife

Yann is married to his wife Isabelle LeCun who studied Pharmacy at faculte de pharmacie. The couple resides in Manhattan, New York. Isabelle is from Beauchamp, Ile-De-France, France. Yann and Isabelle have a son named Erwan D. Lecun.

Yann Lecun Education

He earned a Diplôme d’Ingénieur from the ESIEE Paris in 1983 as well as a PhD in Computer Science from Université Pierre et Marie Curie (today Sorbonne University) in 1987 during which he proposed an early form of the back-propagation learning algorithm for neural networks.

Yann Lecun NYU

Following a short time as a Fellow of the NEC Research Institute (now NEC-Labs America) in Princeton, NJ, Yann joined New York University (NYU) in 2003, where he works as Silver Professor of Computer Science Neural Science at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences and the Center for Neural Science. Yann is also a professor at the Tandon School of Engineering.

At NYU, Yann has worked primarily on Energy-Based Models for supervised and unsupervised learning, feature learning for object recognition in Computer Vision, as well as mobile robotics. In 2012, Yann became the founding director of the NYU Center for Data Science. In 2013, Yann and Yoshua Bengio co-founded the International Conference on Learning Representations, which also adopted a post-publication open review process he formerly advocated on his website.

In 1988, Yann joined the Adaptive Systems Research Department at AT&T Bell Laboratories in Holmdel, New Jersey, United States, headed by Lawrence D. Jackel, where he developed many new machine learning methods. In 1996, Yann also joined AT&T Labs-Research as head of the Image Processing Research Department.

Deep Learning Yann Lecun | Deep Learning

Yann is known for his work in deep learning and the invention of the convolutional network method which is widely used for image, video, and speech recognition. He received the 2018 Turing Award (often referred to as the “Nobel Prize of Computing”), along with Yoshua Bengio and Geoffrey Hinton, for their work on deep learning. Its architectures for convolutional neural networks (CNNs) with convolutional layers and downsampling layers started with the Neocognitron introduced by Kunihiko Fukushima in 1980.
