Rabbi Abby Stein

She did not do any rabbinical work for a few years after leaving the Hasidic group and then coming out. Abby spoke to HuffPost about the first two years after quitting, saying, “I felt very much cut off from God. A rabbi described it as “Post-God Traumatic Disorder.” When God is merely a terrible guy who will punish you, that’s it, I thought. I’m not interested in learning anything about the Jewish faith. This is complete nonsense.

Later, she resumed practicing Judaism and declared, “I don’t believe in God, but I believe in Judaism,” citing the Jewish people and the Jewish calendar, as well as Jewish music, food, and spirituality, as particular elements that inspired her to rediscover some Jewish customs. While she does not observe Shabbat in an Orthodox sense, she claimed that performing simple rituals like lighting candles on Shabbat helped her feel grounded during difficult times prior to coming out and that “it became a mental health and spiritual practice.”

She virtually always shares photos of herself celebrating Shabbat on social media. T’ruah: The Rabbinic Call for Human Rights is a rabbinical organization that Abby actively participates in. She also belongs to Tirdof: New York Jewish Clergy for Justice, a coalition of T’ruah and Jews for Racial and Economic Justice (JFREJ), a rabbinical advocacy group. Abby is the only American Hasid to come out publicly after transgendering. She was previously an ultra-Orthodox rabbi named Yisrael. However, Abby is currently an openly transgender woman.

She was born in Brooklyn and brought up in a Hasidic Jewish community, a conservative Jewish sect that shuns the modern world. Abby is the sixth child and first son in a family of 13 children. She wore the dark clothes and distinctive fur hat of her religious sect like all the males in her community as well as spoke only Yiddish.

Abby Stein Unorthodox

She wrote an online essay about her experience on the set of the Unorthodox TV show. The essay is titled, “On the Set of ‘Unorthodox,’ I Brushed Up Against My Hasidic Past.” On the Unorthodox TV show, Abby portrayed a Hasidic woman, wearing a traditional head covering for Jewish women.
