John Sculley Bio | Wiki

John Sculley ( Full Name: John Sculley III) is a popular American businessman, entrepreneur, and investor in high-tech startups who is the chairman and CMO of RxAdvance Corp, the first cloud-based Pharmacy Benefit Management platform. He is also the founder and Vice Chairman of the Board at Zeta Interactive. John is also a Vice Chairman of the Board at MDLIVE, Inc. He is also a chairman and investor of PeopleTicker Company. He is also the Chairman of SkillsVillage.

Previously, John was the vice-president (1970–1977) and president of PepsiCo (1977–1983), until he was chief executive officer (CEO) of Apple Inc. on April 8, 1983, a role he played until leaving in 1993. In May 1987, John was appointed Silicon Valley’s top-paid executive, with an annual salary of US$10.2 million.  Sales at Apple grew from $800 million to $8 billion under Sculley’s management, although several attributed his success to John joining the company just when Steve Jobs’ visions and Steve Wozniak’s creations had become highly lucrative.

John’s work at Apple remains controversial because of his departure from co-founder Steve Jobs’s sales structure, particularly regarding John’s decision to compete with IBM in selling computers to the same types of customers. Others claimed that the “two clashed over management styles and priorities, Steves focusing on future innovation and John more on current product lines and profitability”. But John ultimately was forced to leave as Apple CEO because he was opposed to licensing Macintosh software and was talking to Goldman Sachs about dividing Apple into two companies. When John left in May 1993, Apple had $2 billion in cash and $200 million in debt.

He is known as an expert in marketing, in part due to his early successes at PepsiCo, notably his introduction of the Pepsi Challenge, which allowed the company to get market share from primary rival Coca-Cola. John used the same marketing strategies throughout the 1980s and 1990s at Apple to mass-market Macintosh personal computers, and now he proceeds to speak and write about disruptive marketing strategies. He is now invested in and involved with many high-tech start-up companies, such as 3CInteractive, Zeta Global, Inflexion Point, Mobeam, OpenPeak, x10 Credit, Pivot Acquisition Corp., nextSource as well as WorldMate.
