Howard Dean ( Full Name: Howard Brush Dean III ) is a popular American physician, author, consultant, and retired politician who now works on the Board of the National Democratic Institute, a democracy-building organization chaired by retired Secretary of State Madeline Albright. Besides, Howard is also an independent consultant specializing in the areas of health care, early childhood development, alternative energy as well as the expansion of grassroots politics around the globe.
From 1991 to 2003, Howard worked as the 79th governor of Vermont. From 2005 to 2009, he was the chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC). He worked as a member of the Vermont House of Representatives from 1983 until 1986 and as Lieutenant Governor of Vermont from 1987 until 1991. Both were part-time roles that enabled Howard to proceed with practicing medicine. In 1991, Howard became governor of Vermont when Richard A. Snelling passed away in office.
Howard was later elected to five two-year terms, working from 1991 until 2003, making him the second longest-working governor in Vermont history, following Thomas Chittenden (1778–1789 and 1790–1797). He worked as chairman of the National Governors Association from 1994 through 1995.
