Neil Sperry is a popular Texas gardening and horticulture scholar recognized due to his books, magazine, radio program, and yearly gardening show. He currently hosts Neil Sperry’s Texas Gardening on Sunday mornings from 8-10 on WBAP. He hosted a radio show on Dallas station KRLD 1080-AM for more than thirty years.
During his February 13, 2010 broadcast, Neil told his audience that KRLD was exercising a 180-day opt-out clause in their work. Neil’s broadcasting at KRLD ended in the summer of 2010. He also has broadcast Plant Talk Texas, his 5-minute daily feature, to over 30 stations since 1978. He has produced over 11,000 programs to date. He served as a Horticulture Specialist at the Texas Cooperative Extension from 1970 to 1977.

A pre-emergent should be used prior to weed seeds starting to emerge. For summer weeds like grassburs (sandburs) and crabgrass: 2 to 3 weeks prior to the average date of the last use freeze for your area. In South Texas, that is late February. On is in good shape time-wise thanks to last week’s cold. In Central and North Central Texas, it is the first two weeks of March.

St. Augustine requires nitrogen to keep its rich green color and vigorous growth. Put it in early April, early June and early September. Nitrogen offers gray leaf spots in summer (see later), so stop applications from mid-June until temperatures start to drop in September.
