He moved to New York in 1990 to pursue comedy after working as a litigation consultant for a short time after graduating. He first worked in advertising and took acting classes at night. His comedy career began in earnest when a friend from the class dared him to take a stand-up seminar that required a live set at the end. Gaffigan loved stand-up and began to play comedy clubs nightly.
