He received a two-book contract from Random House in 2007 while still an undergraduate at Harvard University. His book titled The Last Girlfriend on Earth was given a pilot order by FX within a week of its publishing as Man Seeking Woman. FXX  officially ordered the show with the leading cast of Jay Baruchel, Eric Andre, Britt Lower, and Maya Erskine. Simon was the showrunner and executive producer.  This role made him one of the youngest creators in TV history. Lorne Michaels’ Broadway Video produced the show and ran on FXX for 3 seasons.

Hits and Misses was his fifth collection published in July 2018. NPR  commented on the collection saying. “with this book, Rich has come into his own as one of the most talented writers of comedic fiction working today.”Simon won the Thurber Prize for American Humor for Hits and Misses in 2019. His sixth story collection titled New Teeth was published in July 2021.

He has written for various publications such as NPR’s “Selected Shorts,” McSweeney’s, GQ,  Mad magazine, UK Glamour, Italian Granta, The Believer, The Observer magazine, Vanity Fair, Italian GQ, NPR.com, and the Barcelona Review,[ among other publications. Simon’s writing has also been selected for many anthologies such as The Best of McSweeney’s and I Found This Funny, edited by Judd Apatow. Sony Pictures acquired the film rights to his four-part novella Sell Out in 2013. Sell Out was originally published by the New Yorker in 2013.

At 24, the Harvard alumnus became the youngest-ever staff writer on Saturday Night Live.  Simon was one of the youngest writers ever to be hired on Saturday Night Live. Simon served as a staff writer for Pixar as well. A television comedy series created by Rich titled Man Seeking Woman premiered on the cable channel FXX on January 14, 2015. The comedy is based upon his novel The Last Girlfriend on Earth.

His third book and first novel titled Elliot Allagash was released in May 2010. Jason Reitman optioned the movie rights to the novel. in June 2010. Simon published his second novel titled What in God’s Name in 2021. The New York Times Book Review compared to Douglas Adams’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. The novel served as the basis for the first season of the TV series Miracle Workers in 2019. Subsequently, John’s short story Revolution inspired the second season of the program.
