He is best known as the co-founder of The Patrón Spirits Company and the Paul Mitchell line of hair products. John was once homeless but later become a self-made billionaire.

Due to his personal career and achievements in business and becoming a successful entrepreneur, John has been described as a living example of the American Dream. He has been featured in a number of reports and documentaries.

He was born to his Italian immigrant father and a Greek immigrant mother in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, California.  John’s parents divorced when he was only 2 years old. John and his older brother were sent to an East Los Angeles foster home when their single mother proved unable to support both children. They stayed there during the week until he was nine and returned to his mother. John started selling Christmas cards and newspapers with his older brother to support his family.

John bought the train car in 1996 and used $2 million to renovate it. Patrón Tequila Express is 85 feet (25.91 m) long and consists of three staterooms.

Each stateroom has a bathroom and shower. Also,  the car has a kitchen, a dining room, an observation room, as well as an outdoor deck. Apart from the mileage fees paid to Amtrak to transport the train car across the United States, Patrón Tequila Express costs $10,000 a month to staff, maintain, store, and insure the Patrón Tequila Express.
