Bret developed an affinity for glutes and how to build them. He extensively studied over a couple of decades and he eventually garnered the nickname ‘The Glute Guy.’ The 2006 UFC fight inspired Bret to create the barbell hip thrust. He noticed during the fight that one of the fighters had an ineffective hip bump. Bret thought it was because of weak glutes. He spent some time in his garage toying around with his bench. He sat against it, with his feet on the floor, added a weighted barbell on his lap, and thrust his hips to full extension.
The exercise allowed for a full range of motion and the capacity to load weight and this was the perfect glute-focused exercise. Ever since, Bret has established himself as the world’s leading expert in gluteal muscle functioning and development, strength training, as well as program design. Apart from developing an inclusive glute-training system and the barbell hip thrust, Bret invented an adaptable piece of equipment called the Hip Thruster, used to perform the hip thrust.
