Bill Phillips Eas
In 1996, he acquired Experimental and Applied Sciences (EAS) from founders Anthony Almada and Ed Byrd. Bill promoted the company’s products through heavy editorial-style advertisements in MM2K. He eventually rose to the forefront of the nutritional supplement industry led by flagship products such as the creatine supplement Phosphagen, Myoplex (a meal replacement powder), and HMB. Bill remained at the forefront for more than five years.
Bill was a multi-millionaire by 1995 and was well known in celebrity and sports circles. Athletes such as José Canseco would contact him for advice on steroids. Also, Bill consulted with celebrities such as John Elway, Jerry Seinfeld, Sylvester Stallone, and Demi Moore. Bill sold his majority interest in EAS in 1999 to North Castle Partners for $160 million. However, he remained on the Board of Directors for a number of years afterward. He had retained about a third of the company, which he sold in 200. As of 2022, Bill is no longer involved with EAS.
Bill Phillips Fitness
He started bodybuilding in 1982. In 1983, Bill moved to Southern California to train at Gold’s Gym Venice beach (known as the Mecca of bodybuilding). He remained there until 1986. He admist that during this period, Bill was introduced to steroid use, at different times cycling on Deca Durabolin, Andriol, Sustanon, among other drugs that helped him grow from 185 lbs. to 215 lbs. Despite all that, Bill did not succeed as a bodybuilder. He was by then 21-year-old and he moved back to Colorado where he took classes at the University of Colorado at Denver. Bill specialized specifically in the study of exercise physiology and sports nutrition. He would later start his publishing career.
Mile High Publishing started with a small newsletter in 1985 teaching bodybuilders how to use anabolic steroids. The newsletter was written and printed in Bill’s mother’s garage. The original name of Mile High Publishing was The Anabolic Reference Update which was ] funded with $180 that Bill had made from mowing lawns. He started working with doctors and research scientists in 1991 to develop performance nutrition products. The product was meant to help athletes get better muscle-building and fat-burning effects from their workouts.
Bill moved out of his mother’s home in 1992 and changed the publication’s format and name to Muscle Media 2000 ( “MM2K”) which debuted in March 1992. On the cover, it featured bodybuilder Lee Labrada. MM2K published frank discussion of the underground aspects of bodybuilding including the use of steroids and how to smuggle them. Also, MM2K published columns by writers such as Mike Mooney, Charles Poliquin, Editor-in-Chief TC Luoma, The Steroid Guru Dan Duchaine, as well as Michael Dullnig M.D. aka “Dr. X.”
Bill Phillips Supplements
He highly endorsed a meal replacement supplement called MET-Rx in MM2K. This relationship with readers helped MET-Rx become the highest-selling bodybuilding supplement ever at that time. Later, it was revealed that Bill and the creator of MET-Rx, Dr. A. Scott Connelly, were in fact business partners, and the endorsements were clever marketing.
The partnership included bodybuilders Jeff Everson and Lee Labrada. Around this time, Bill started working with James Bradshaw (later of SoCal Supplements). In 1986, James was convicted of dispensing human and animal steroids without prescriptions. Eventually, this led to James serving four years in a Louisiana prison. He educated himself on marketing while in prison.
According to TC Luoma, former Muscle Media 2000 editor-in-chief it was James who convinced Bill to market MET-Rx heavily in the Natural Supplement Review, Bill’s’ supposed unbiased review of countless bodybuilding supplements. Also, James had the idea for Bill to give the Review away for free to readers of Muscle Media 2000. This would give the MET-Rx addresses of potential buyers, and a large amount of advertising.
