Jessica B Harris is an American culinary historian, cookbook author, college professor, and journalist. Currently, she hosts a monthly program called My Welcome Table, on Heritage Radio Network. Also, Jessica is professor emerita at Queens College, City University of New York. Jessica taught there for 50 years.
She is also the author of 15 books, including cookbooks, non-fiction food writing, and memoir. Jessica has won James Beard Foundation Awards twice, including for Lifetime Achievement in 2020. In 2021, her book High on the Hog was adapted as a four-part Netflix series by the same name.

She attended the United Nations International School in New York City from 1953 to 1961. At the age of 16, Jessica graduated from the High School of Performing Arts. She went on to join Bryn Mawr College. She also studied in Paris during her junior year at Bryn Mawr. in 1968, Jessica earned an A.B. in French.
After her graduation, Jessica returned to France to study at the Universite de Nancy for one year. She later joined Queens College for her master’s degree which she earned in 1971. She traveled to West Africa in 1972 to work on her doctoral dissertation. In 1983, Jessica graduated with a Ph.D. from New York University.

She worked as a journalist in the 1970s before becoming a food writer. Jessica served as a book review editor at Essence and theater critic for the United States’ oldest black newspaper, New York Amsterdam News. She worked as a resident food historian for Sara Moulton’s Cooking Live Primetime from July to November in 1999. Also, Jessica appeared on different television shows including The Curtis Aikens Show, The Main Ingredient, The Today Show, and Good Morning America.
She is now professor emerita in the English Department at Queens College/C.U.N.Y Jessica was the inaugural scholar in residence in the Ray Charles Chair in African American Material Culture at Dillard University in New Orleans. She is the founder of the Institute for the Study of Culinary Cultures at Dillard. As of 2022, Jessica hosts a monthly program called My Welcome Table, on Heritage Radio Network.
She has so far published a total of 12 books. Jessica’s primary subjects are the culinary history, foodways, and recipes of the African diaspora. In 2004, she won the lifetime achievement awards from the Southern Foodways Alliance. in 2010, Jessica won the James Beard Foundation special award honoree. She published a memoir titled My Soul Looks Back in 2017.
Netflix released a four-episode series High on the Hog: How African American Cuisine Transformed America in May 2021. The series is based on Jessica’s 2011 book High on the Hog: A Culinary Journey from Africa to America. She won a James Beard Foundation Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2020.
