A former courtyard was opened up once again in the kitchen. The existing tarmac notary carpark was turned into a rigorous urban garden that featured a square pool made of Belgian blue stone. After the structural work was completed and everything was painted white, the refining of the details and spaces started. Essence, abstraction, and purity formed the leitmotif to create this house.
The choice of materials, a limited array of colors, and the combination of roughly woven textiles with the smooth surface of natural stone firmly established the house in the tradition of Flemish sensuality, which is mostly disguised by formal rigor. The huge rectangular living room oozes calm and understatement. The house has a pale poplar wide board floor, uniformly tall wall cupboards, and tall deep windows onto the garden. Objects are carefully selected to create a subtle contemporary tension. The courtyard offers light for the hall, the kitchen, and the reception room, which doubles up as the dining room. The original staircase of the house was scoured, sanded, and simplified.
