His first major break was with the Champaign-Urbana News-Gazette. Terry served as a staff writer and copy editor. Also,  he wrote a rock ‘n’ roll column called Backbeat. While writing Backbeat, one of Terry’s subjects included a 1982 tour by U2. He worked for The Charlotte News from 1982 to 1984 and later the Charlotte Observer. From 1984 to 1990, Terry served as a religion writer for the Rocky Mountain News in Denver.  He taught at Milligan College as well. Since 1988,  Terry has been serving as a religion columnist for On Religion at the Scripps Howard News Service in Washington, D.C.

He as well runs a well-known religious journalism blog called  GetReligion. On top o that, he serves as the current Director of the Washington Journalism Center. There, his major role is to teach journalism to students in Washington, D.C.  Terry has a long association with Howard Ahmanson Jr. and his wife, Roberta. Their friendship dates back to Roberta’s tenure as a religion reporter for The Orange County Register in the late 1980s. Roberta was an original financial backer of GetReligion.

On the other hand, Ahmanson has funded the Washington Journalism Center and the Oxford Centre for Religion and Public Life, which now hosts the website. After  Terry left the Christian body in which he was raised i.e the Southern Baptist Convention, he was for a time a member of The Episcopal Church.
