Summer Dashe is an American former anchor and reporter. She currently serves as a Visual Storytelling and Communications Contractor for the Department of Energy in Knoxville, Tennessee. Summer started her new role in Jan 2022. Formerly, she served as an anchor and director of storytelling at WATE 6 On Your Side ( ABC affiliate) based in Knoxville, Tennessee from Aug 2020 to Nov 2021.

Summer won the historian award in 3rd grade and since then, she has never stopped writing, recording, and also telling stories. She was hired by The local newspaper while in high school. However, the newspaper does not exist. Summer wrote a column and took photos around town. She was also the news editor for the high school paper. In college, Summer worked part-time for The Dallas Morning News where she covered the crime beat in the morning prior to heading to her journalism classes in the afternoon.

Summer thought that she would eventually go into print because she was so intimidated by TV. However, she loved video work too much that she decided to get over it! Later, Summer went to join WPDE, in Myrtle Beach to serve as their anchor and reporter.

While in South Carolina, she helped launch the station’s first investigative team where the team challenged state laws and uncovered deep corruption at a local police department. Her second natural was Hurricane coverage. Natural disasters hit year after another. Summer was promoted to evening anchor and managing editor after earning the trust of the community out in the field. In the new position, she helped train the staff on storytelling techniques and news ethics.

Summer was hired to launch a newscast called the first-ever Energy cast, showcasing the work happening on-site in Oak Ridge, TN.  She and her team reported on groundbreaking medical research, environmental clean-up that is changing the landscape, as well as national security missions keeping them safe from the gravest threats abroad. Summer was determined to make sure visual storytelling efforts relay those impacts to the community, lawmakers, and top federal leaders.

As a documentary producer, she was hired on to help tell the true-crime story of a woman who disappeared in South Carolina. Summer travel to shoots on weekends. It’s a case she once covered for five years as a local journalist there. In addition to all that, Summer teaches media and interview training to college staff, first responders, and hospital employees as well. She believes in building a positive, supportive, and encouraging work environment.  Summer is very skilled in media ethics.

While in the newsroom, she was a go-to manager for tough ethical discussions and decision-making. Journalism is the purpose she chose in life and disability advocacy is the purpose life chose for her. You’ll often find Summer advocating and speaking about Dysautonomia, a chronic illness she developed at the age of 26. Her awareness efforts have led to viral recognition for an underdiagnosed condition.
