Oliver North Iran Contra | Contra | Scandal

As a result of his participation in the Iran–Contra affair, he came into the public spotlight. It was a political scandal during the Reagan administration. Oliver claimed partial responsibility for the sale of weapons through intermediaries to Iran. Profits were being channeled in Nicaragua to the Contras. It was alleged that he was liable for the establishment of a covert network that subsequently funneled those funds to the Contras.

Congress passed the Boland Amendment that banned the appropriation of U.S. finances by intelligence agencies for the support of the Contras. Oliver petitioned $10 million from the Sultan of Brunei to skirt U.S. prohibitions on funding the Contras. He however gave the wrong number of the Swiss bank account meant to launder the money. Thus, the money went to a Swiss businessman. It was tracked down by a Senate committee so that it would be returned to Brunei.
