In 1950, Norman earned his BA degree, in English literature from Columbia, where he became mentored by Lionel Trilling. Norman concurrently received a second bachelor’s degree in Hebrew literature from the nearby Jewish Theological Seminary of America.

Following being awarded the Kellett Fellowship from Columbia and a Fulbright Scholarship, Norman later earned a second BA in literature with first-class honors as well as an Oxbridge MA from Clare College, Cambridge, where Norman briefly pursued doctoral studies following rejecting a graduate fellowship from Harvard.
