An announcement was made on August 20 stating that Mike would step down after offensive comments he had made in the past emerged. The five episodes Mike filmed the day before aired in September, as the show’s first day of production on the new season. Mike retained his role at both shows with the full backing of Sony Pictures as well as the head of its television division, Ravi Ahuja.

This happened despite speculation that Mike would resign as executive producer of Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! following the scandal. Over a week after Mike resigned as permanent host, he was fired on August 31, 2021, as executive producer of both Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune.  Since  Mike’s departure, Michael Davies from Embassy Row has been serving as interim executive producer.
