According to the doctors who checked her, they said that it was likely a gene mutation but that did not really help them understand why it was happening to her. The family was that Clementina would need surgery and afterward she would be okay. However, immediately after surgery, the doctors found out that cancer had spread to her lymph nodes and perhaps the rest of her body.
She was now stage 3 lung cancer which meant that she would require chemotherapy and radiation. After she underwent chemotherapy and radiation, she had a scan after every few months to check if cancer would return and after five years of routine scans, it was confirmed that Clementina was able to beat the odds.

Miguel later joined the University of California in Santa Cruz but transferred after his senior year and later attended a community college in his hometown. His aunt, who was a news anchor at San Francisco Bay Area, proposed that he considers taking a class being taught at San Francisco State University (SFSU) by her co-anchor. He later joined the University and years later he said that he fell in love with the broadcasting department, his classes as well as his local news internship. Miguel graduated with high honors with a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Communications from SFSU.
