Mark Driscoll Mars Hill Church

After graduating from college, Mark and his wife Grace relocated to Seattle. While there, the two used to attend Antioch Bible Church. They worked with that church’s college ministry as volunteers. Later, Mark was hired as an intern and through his internship, he met Mike Gunn who worked for an Athletes in Action ministry at the University of Washington. Mark also met Lief Moi, a radio show host.

The three men started to discuss planting an “urban, postmodern” church in Seattle. The pastor responsible for Antioch Bible Church’s new church planting ministry called Greg Kappas mentored the three men and also helped them develop their plans. With the help of Greg Kappas, they founded Mars Hill Church in spring 1995 and officially launched the church in fall 1996. The church first met in Mark’s home but by spring 1997, the church had relocated and expanded to two services.

Later, Mark reflected that he was “not ready” when he planted Mars Hill at age 25. In 1997, Mark was invited to speak at a Leadership Network pastors’ conference held in California. He made a speech that inspired many within the nascent emerging church movement. According to him,  they shifted the movement’s focus from reaching Generation X to reaching the postmodern world. Mars Hill Church and  Mark were thrust into the national spotlight as a result of the speech.

He was later interviewed on National Public Radio. Mother Jones magazine published a feature on the Mars Hill church that made it grow from 160 members in 1996 to 350 in 1999. However, in the fall of 2014, a group of elders released a report that investigated accusations of bullying and intimidating behavior by Mark made by 21 former church elders. On October 20, 2014,  Mark publicly stated that before his resignation from Mars Hill, he and his family were harassed and he had also received some death threats.
