Marcus attended Louisiana State University and joined the LSU Tigers football team under coach Nick Saban. He was initially placed as a tight end but was later moved to the defensive line. In 2001 as a freshman, he played tight end, fullback, and defensive end. That year Marcus recorded two catches for 20 yards on offense and eight tackles, a sack, and a tackle for loss on defense which earned him freshman All-Southeastern Conference (SEC) honors.
