Ken Phelps ( Full name: Kenneth Allan Phelps ) is an American first baseman and retired professional baseball designated hitter. He played for six different Major League Baseball (MLB) teams between 1980 and 1990. Ken primarily played with the Seattle Mariners. Baseball statistician Bill James cited Ken as an example of a player who despite compiling strong minor league statistics, was unfairly denied a chance to play in the majors.
In the fifteenth round of the 1976 baseball amateur draft, Ken was selected by the Kansas City Royals as the left-hitting first baseman. From 1980 to 1981, he hit a combined 43 home runs for the Omaha Royals, KC’s Triple-A affiliate in the American Association. The Royals traded Ken to the Montreal Expos for pitcher Grant Jackson before the 1982 season.
