Jagdterrier Dog Breed Introduction 

Jagdterrier( pronounced ‘Yack Terrier’) is a small-sized versatile hunting dog originally from German. It is particularly suited for flushing game underground although they are also used on land to drive rabbits and wild boar out of thickets. The Jagdterriers are also used in blood tracking wounded animals such as deer.

This breed also makes excellent pets, although, owners should remember they are primarily hunting dogs with a strong prey drive hence may not be suitable for homes with cats and other small mammals like hamsters and gerbils. These dogs enjoy outdoors and may get quickly bored if kept inside. If indoors for far too long, Jagdterriers may become difficult to deal with.

Jagdterrier Origin | History

The Jagdterriers were developed in German in the 20th century shortly after World War I. The developers of the breed wanted to create a fearless hunting dog that was good at underground hunting. The efforts for creating this breed was spearheaded by three hunters, a zoo director, and a Doctor.

Following years of intensive breeding and skillful crossings. The breeds used included the Old English Wirehaired Terrier, Fox Terriers, and Welsh Terriers. In 1926, the German Jagdtwerrier Club was formed. This breed has been part of the Foundation Stock Service of AKC since June 2014.

Jagdterrier Lifespan

The Jagdterriers have a lifespan of 10 to 12 years.

Jagdterrier Grooming 

The Jagdterriers have a hard rough hair or course smooth hair that sheds at moderate levels throughout the year. Weekly brushing using a slicker brush will suffice to keep the coat looking healthy and also to remove dirt. However, during the seasonal shedding, brush the coat at least twice or thrice a week to keep shedding to a minimum. The Jagterriers need an occasional bath using a canine shampoo and conditioner.

Following a bath, thoroughly clean off the grooming products from the coat to prevent skin irritation. Trim the nails of a Jagdterrier fortnightly to prevent splitting, cracking, and overgrowth. Brush the teeth of Jagdterriers at least twice a week using a dog formulated toothpaste and toothbrush to remove tartar buildup. Clean the ears once a week to remove dirt and excess wax using cotton balls dampened in an ear cleanser solution.

Jagdterrier Shedding 

The Jagdterriers shed moderately all year round and heavily while experiencing seasonal change once or twice a year.

Short Hair Jagdterrier | Wirehaired Jagdterrier

The Jagdterrier may have a short hard wiry coat or a coarse smooth coat that is also short. Both wirehaired and smooth coated shed all year round. The wirehaired Jagdterriers need periodic hand stripping.

Jagdterrier Hypoallergenic

The Jagdterriers have a moulting coat that sheds throughout the year spreading dander and fur around the house that triggers allergies. Therefore, they are not hypoallergenic dogs. Apart from dander and fur, Jagdterrier’s saliva, urine, and mucus also contain a protein allergen that triggers inflammation.

The Jagdtertriers are intelligent dogs that benefit from upbeat, challenging, and short training sessions. Parents use interactive toys, treats, playtime, petting, and verbal praise to encourage positive behaviors. Jagdterrier Exercise Requirements 

Due to the high prey-drive, Jagdterriers should exercise in a secured fenced-in yard and go for walks while on a leash. These dogs also need regular exercise like indoor playtime, running in the fenced yard, hunting, going for walks, hiking, swimming, or retrieving flying discs or balls. Jagdterriers may also participate in dog sports like rally, agility, and obedience.

Mature Jagdterriers have a height of 13 to 16 inches ( approx. 33 to 40 cm ). 

Jagdterrier Weight  

Female Jagdterriers have a weight of 17 to 19 pounds ( approx. 7.5 to 8.5 kg ) while male Jagdterriers have a weight of 20 to 22 pounds ( approx. 9 to 10 kg ).

The Jagdterriers are small-sized hunting dogs with a weight of 17 to 22 pounds ( approx. 7.5 to 10 kg ) and a height of 13 to 16 inches ( approx. 33 to 40 cm ).

Jagdterrier Health Issues 

The Jagdterriers are healthy dogs but they may be susceptible to certain health issues such as PLL(primary lens luxation), cataracts, myopathy and hypothyroidism. They are also prone to field injuries such as scrapes and cuts when hunting.
