Dean Baquet is an American journalist currently working as the executive editor of The New York Times since May 14, 2014. Before, Dean worked as a managing editor under the previous executive editor Jill Abramson. Prior to that, he worked as Washington bureau chief for the paper from March 2007 to September 2011.

He also reported for the Chicago Tribune from December 1984 through March 1990, and before that, for The Times-Picayune in New Orleans for around seven years. During his time at the Chicago Tribune, Dean served as associate Metro editor for investigations and worked as a chief investigative reporter, covering corruption in politics and the garbage-hauling industry.

He became the special projects editor for the business desk in May 1992. He held the same title in January 1994, but Dean operated out of the executive editor’s office. Dean became national editor in 1996.

Dean joined the Los Angeles Times as managing editor in 2000, serving as editor John Carroll’s “right-hand man”. He became the top editor in 2005 after Carroll resigned amid clashes with the Tribune Company, which had acquired the Los Angeles Times in 2000 from the Chandler family. Dean was the first Black person to serve as the newspaper’s top editor. In 2006, he was fired after he publicly opposed plans to cut newsroom jobs.

After two months dean rejoined The New York Times as the Washington bureau chief. Dean became managing editor in September 2011, working under executive editor Jill Abramson, and on May 14, 2014, he was promoted to executive editor. He has made hiring reporters and editors of color a priority, saying that his hard work to diversify the newsroom has been “intense and persistent”.
