Clarence Thomas is an American jurist. He currently serves as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Clarence was nominated by President George H. W. Bush to succeed Thurgood Marshall. He has served in the Supreme Court of the United States since 1991. Clarence is the second African American, after Marshall, to serve on the Court. He is the longest-serving member since Anthony Kennedy’s retirement in 2018.

Clarence’s father left the family when he was two years old. Though his mother worked hard, she was sometimes paid only pennies per day. She struggled to earn enough money to feed the family. Sometimes, she was forced to rely on charity. Clarence and his family lost their house to fire and were left homeless. He and his younger brother called Myers were taken to live in Savannah with his maternal grandparents, Myers and Christine (née Hargrove) Anderson. While there, Clarence experienced amenities such as indoor plumbing and regular meals for the first time.

Myers Anderson had little formal education. He built a thriving fuel oil business that also sold ice.  When Clarence was 10, Myers started taking the family to help at a farm every day from sunrise to sunset. He believed in hard work and self-reliance. Also, Myers counseled the children to “never let the sun catch you in bed.” He impressed upon his grandsons the importance of a good education. Clarence refers to him as “the greatest man I have ever known.”

He was expected to be released “in a day or two,” but ende up spending almost a full week under inpatient care.
