Cinemassacre Monster Madness
He has run Monster Madness, in which James reviews one horror movie for each day in October, since 2007. Every year, James has adopted a different theme for Monster Madness. 2007 became the history of horror. 2008 was Godzillathon, in which James reviewed all of the Godzilla films chronologically. 2009 became Monster Madness Three, which dealt with a variety of popular and little-known films of horror. 2010 became Camp Cult, which dealt with both campy horror films and cult classic films, like Troll 2. 2011 became Sequel-A-Thon, which dealt with horror sequels. And 2012 became 80’s-a-Thon, which included only movies made in the 1980s.
In 2017, Son of Monster Madness debuted, which consisted simply of five new reviews, with the rest of October bulked by reuploads of older reviews formerly not available on YouTube. Monster Madness, under the original branding despite not having videos posted every day, came back in October 2019, now having James with a guest talk about the films. James brought back Monster Madness in 2021 with the aid of Screenwave Media. However, James redacted the first two published videos of the 2021 series following realizing that his writer had plagiarized the contents of the episodes’ scripts.
James has self-released Nerd videos on his Cinemassacre website and YouTube account in a very sporadic manner in order to balance his personal life with the other projects he continuously works on. By 2013, the show garnered over 900,000 subscribers and over 400 million views on YouTube. By 2014, James already had 1.5 million subscribers. James stated that the show “got popular right around when YouTube got popular.”
In January 2013, the YouTube channel became suddenly shut down due to claims of severe violations of YouTube’s terms of service. YouTube afterward reinstated the channel. In March 2016, the channel reached 2 million subscribers, 10 years following the channel’s creation and first uploads. James made a short video to thank all the people who subscribed and watched the videos on the channel, and for supporting himself, Mike Matei, and everyone who made him more popular. In June 2019, the channel had 3 million subscribers, to which James once again thanked everyone’s support and for the fans still watching Nerd videos on the show’s 13th anniversary (on YouTube).
James announced in December 2020, on the main Cinemassacre YouTube channel that longtime collaborator Mike Matei would be leaving the channel in order for Matei to focus on his Twitch career. In 2021, the channel is currently backed up on Odysee, and Cinemassacre’s Monster Madness is available there, linked on their website.
