She published her first book titled Valaida on January 1, 2004, through Virago UK publishers. Valaida is about her personal journey since she was a child living in Chattanooga.

Presently she works as a regular writer for several magazines in London including The Guardian. In 2019, Allen contributed to New Daughters of Africa an international anthology compiled of literature and orature by over 200 women from Africa. Presently, she is an active member of the Chineke! Foundation which is the first professional British Orchestra where the majority are Black.

As a political activist, Allen actively campaigned for the election of Barack Obama in the 2008 general election through the organization “Americans Abroad for Obama”. Additionally, she was the first African-American female member of the Directors Guild of America.
