Bill Hayes ( Real name: William Foster Hayes III) is an American recording artist and actor. In the spring of 1955, Hayes’ song titled “The Ballad of Davy Crockett“ hit the top of the Billboard charts. The actor started to focus on dramatic acting parts in the late 1960s  after a successful career as a musician which dates back to the late 1940s.

His acting career led Hayes to be cast in a role that gained him additional fame to a younger generation. This new chapter in his career was launched in 1970  after he originated the character of Doug Williams on NBC’s drama series titled Days of Our Lives, Hayes continues to play the same role regularly on the serial to date.

The actor went to Whittier Grade School and Thornton Township High. Hayes enlisted in the Navy Air Corps in March 1943, while a freshman at DePauw University. In return, he received his welcome letter on his eighteenth birthday ordering him to report for active duty on July 1st. Hayes trained to be a fighter pilot for 27 months.

However, the actor was two weeks shy of receiving his commission in the Marine Air Corps as a 2nd Lieutenant scheduled to fly an F8F off a carrier after the end if World War II. Hayes won the World War II Victory Medal and the American Campaign Medal. Hayes opted for civilian life after he was given the choice of reenlisting in the Navy or getting out immediately.

The actor then returned to complete his Bachelor of Arts requirements at DePauw following five weeks of hitch-hiking around the Mid-West to celebrate with buddies who were coming home as well. He majored in Music and English and graduated with a degree on the same in June 1947. After graduation, he became a member of Lambda Chi Alpha. Hayes also holds Northwestern University’s master’s degree in music and West Virginia University’s Ph.D. in education.

In the early 1950s, Hayes was a singer on the Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca variety show called Your Show of Shows. Three recorded versions of the Ballad of Davy Crockett were in the top 30 during the Davy Crockett craze in 1955. The actor’s version was the most popular and became #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks. Hayes sold over two million copies and was awarded a gold disc as a result.

Apart from doing music, Hayes starred on Broadway in 1953 in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Me and Juliet. Also, he had other small hits in the 1950s such as “Wringle, Wrangle,””The Berry Tree” and covers of “High Noon.” In 1957, “Wringle, Wrangle” was his only other Hot 100 hit, reaching #33. Hayes was introduced as a convict On Days of Our Lives who was also a lounge singer.

Doug’s character returned in 1986 and 1987  and also in 1993 and 1996. Hayes has been on the show since 1999. In the spring of 2004, Dr. Marlena Evans killed Hayes’ character of Doug. However, in an elaborate plot hatched by James E. Reilly, the head writer, Doug turned up alive on a tropical island and went home to his wife.

A documentary about Hayes’s life titled World by the Tail was released in 2017 and was made available online f for his fans to watch. While present in the show’s audience on June 27, 2017.
