Archie Williams is an American singer who was a contestant on Season 15 of AGT(America’s Got Talent). He served a sentence of 37 years after he was wrongfully convicted. Archie was released on March 21, 2019. Furthermore, Archie finished in the bottom 5 of the top 10. 

He started singing when he was in jail by participating in a prison choir and a band that he formed. Music made him feel connected to the world while serving a jail term of 37 years. While in jail, Archie spent his time watching the episodes of America’s Got Talent as he visualized himself singing on stage.

Archie Williams’s Story | Louisiana

He was in Louisiana, Baton Rouge when he was arrested for allegedly raping a 31-year-old woman and stabbing her. At the time of his arrest, he was walking when the police snatched him putting his photo in a photo array that was viewed by a woman that was attacked in Louisiana.

The victim didn’t recognize the man in the photo array but after repeatedly viewing it, he accused Archie of being her attacker. All this while Arche knew he was innocent but being a black man he had no ability to fight against the state of Louisiana. In addition, Archie was 22 years old when he was wrongfully vindicated and sentenced to Angola for more than 36 years with no chance of having parole.

Fortunately, The Innocence Project was moved by his story and took over his case with an aim of finding evidence to prove Archie’s innocence. The project incorporated a search of fingerprint evidence in the FBI database which was finally granted on March 14, 2019, following his release a week later.

After spending 12 years in prison, Archie wrote a letter to the Innocence Project requesting them to review his case. In the 1990s the project was moved by his story and took over his case with an aim of finding evidence to prove Archie’s innocence.

The project incorporated a search of fingerprint evidence in the FBI database which was finally granted on March 14, 2019, following his release a week later. The fingertips were a match with a serial rapist who died in prison in 1996.

After spending 36 years of his life in Angola prison, Archie was set free after the intervention of the Innocence Project. According to the Louisiana law, he is eligible for a compensation of $ 250,000. The amount is insufficient compared to the three-plus decade in prison and cant compensate for the suffering that Archie and his family endured.

In addition, according to Crescent To Capital Organization, Archie was only able to receive a maximum of $330,000. Therefore, this means that he would be paid $8500 for each year that he spent in prison.

In May 2020, Archie participated in the auditions of America’s Got Talent singing, “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me.” a classic sang by Elton John. Elton was inspired by Archie’s story and became an Ambassador of the Innocence Project.

The performance made all the judges tear earning a standing ovation from everyone in the theater, and got universal praise from the judge’s feedback. The video of Archie’s performance was later posted and boasted at least 2.2 million views.

Moreover, Archie’s audition performance earned him a ticket to the Quarterfinals, where he sang Stevie Wonder’s “Love’s In Need of Love Today”. The performance got Arche standing ovations from all the judges; Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum, and Sofia Vergara. He also received enough votes to proceed to the semifinals. During the semifinals, he performed Westlife’s “Flying Without Wings” dedicating it to his daughter.

He earned the standing ovations from all the judges. Two judges voted for him to proceed to advance to the Finals. During episode 1521 of AGT, Archie sang The Beatles’ “Blackbird” earning standing ovations from three judges, Sofia Vergara, Howie Mandel, and Heidi Klum.

During the finale, Archie performed Everything You Touch is a Song along with Marvin Winans. However, he didn’t receive enough votes to enter the Top 5, eliminating him from the Agt competition instead of Brandon Leake.
